At the Kansas Black Farmers Association (KBFA), we are thrilled to share the latest updates from our USDA Organic Certification Grant program, which supports urban and rural farmers in their journey toward organic certification. This program is empowering farmers to embrace sustainable practices, strengthen their communities, and build resilient food systems.
Celebrating Our First Cohort of Organic Graduates
On December 15th, we proudly celebrated our first cohort of “Becoming Organic Certified” participants. These dedicated individuals, representing both urban and rural farms, successfully completed the program and received completion awards. A heartfelt congratulations to the 12 graduates who are now paving the way for more farmers to go organic!
Recognizing Micro Grant Recipients
We are excited to announce the recipients of the Cultivate KC Micro Grant:
- Dr. Stephanie Freeman
- Chris Horne
Each received $3,500 to further their efforts in sustainable farming and organic practices. These funds will support their innovative projects and community-focused initiatives.
KBFA 25 for 25 Contest Winner
Congratulations to Radifah Zalzala, the winner of our KBFA 25 for 25 Contest! Radifah was awarded a $2,500 prize after attending over 25 different organic-focused activities, including national conferences, workshops, festivals, farm field days, and a high-tunnel community construction project. Her commitment to organic farming and community development is truly inspiring.
A Promising Planting Season
As spring approaches, six organic farming class cohorts are gearing up for their planting season. These farmers have creatively converted their garages or basements into vibrant green spaces to start their crops. The participating farms include:
- Ecconcentric Farm
- Petals & Berries by Tammy Garden
- Griffith Family Farm
- MBJ Vegan Farms
- Zalzala Family Farm
- Horne Family Farm
These farms represent a blend of innovation and tradition, proving that organic practices can thrive in both urban and rural settings.
Looking Ahead
The USDA Organic Certification Grant program is more than a milestone; it is a movement. At KBFA, we are committed to supporting Black farmers in achieving organic certification, expanding their market opportunities, and contributing to the growth of sustainable agriculture. We look forward to seeing how these farmers continue to cultivate success and inspire their communities.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to grow together!
